I went out for weekly butt checks and found my girl with a big ball of poop on her vent. I brought her inside and soaked and soaked in Epsom salt and washed with veterycin foam soap. Once clean I found this! I cleaned with veterycin spray and silver honey. I also had some amoxicillin left from a previous sick girl so I gave her one of those pills. She pooped big twice and as soon as I got her in a crate she was eating. What the heck is this? Infection from the poop? Egg broken inside? @aart @Rosemaryandthyme @nuthatched @Eggcessive

It may be a prolapse or an irritated swollen vent from pecking, constipation, or trying to lay an egg. I would separate inside a wire dog crate with food and water for her protection, and keep her vent from drying out with applying some vaseline, coconut oil, honey, or hydrocortisone cream.

I had a chicken with a vent that looked the same one day, randomly. I believe she had prolapse vent because part of her insides were out. I could gently push them back in, but a couple minutes later it would go outside again! I decided for her comfort (and I didn’t have the resources to care separately for her for the rest of her life) to end her time.

I hope you won’t have to do that, though. There are sources I’ve read where the owner was able to separate and give intensive care to their chickens until they got mostly better. It would happen every now and then and need care again, but the chickens survived!

@Eggcessive Thanks! I thought prolapse also but nothing looks like it’s sticking out. I did apply silver honey and veterycin. Lots of cheesy looking stuff. She is separated. I have all the items you suggested to apply. Which one would be best? No chance it is vent gleet? Also it can’t hurt for me to give her the amoxicillin I have right? Should I add vitamins or probiotics to her water?

I agree it's prolapsed.

I'd also give her Extra Calcium asap. Calcium Citrate+D3 now, then once daily for at least a week. You can find this at Walmart, CVS, etc. Calcium is crucial for contractions and retention, it may also help her expel some material as well.

Could be the cheesy material is Lash Material, hard to know. So yes, I'd give the Amoxicillin as well. Dose is 57mg per pound of weight given orally twice a day for 7-10 days.

You can use the silver honey and vetericyn if you wish. The main thing is to keep the exposed tissued coated with something so it doesn't dry out.

Keep her hydrated.

Example of Calcium Citrate+D3, aim for giving at least 300mg daily.

I have some of this in my first aid kit. The pills are huge! Not sure how to get them down her without choking her.

Thanks! I have been giving the calcium since you said to start and the amoxicillin. Also cleaning it with silver honey and veterycin spray. I also put some extra moisturizing hyrdacortisone on as someone mentioned that would help reduce inflammation. I also have some childerens ibuprofen. Can I give that has well? This what it looked like this evening (on the right) compared to last night when I found her. And got it
Cleaned up

Looks to be improving.

The pills are not too big, but if you wish, cut the pill in half and give her 1/2 let her swallow, then the other half.

I wouldn't give pain reliever. Just continue to keep the tissue moist.
