Help vets offices closed

Thanks, @FrostRanger --I just edited my post bc the guy showed the broomstick method as well. Ok, I'll do it that way. I'm going to wait till after I've checked with neighbor and if that's a no go, I'll do it myself with broomstick.

Everyone's support and knowledge here have been invaluable and you guys know way more about all of this than the vet. Hopefully this will spare her further suffering and it will hopefully go smoothly.

@Appalachickens I'm not confident enough w/ a gun to be sure I'm not going to do it wrong. My neighbor said he can do it this afternoon. I'm relieved but still sick at heart. I have 3 other hens and after them I won't be getting any more. I had thought I could handle all of this but I guess sometimes we don't know about ourselves until we're actually in the situation. I know it might be easier if I had a very large flock, but truly I think it's the fact of taking a life that I can't seem to get past. It's not that I think it's wrong, but just that I can't do it. I've been trying to prepare for this for hours and I'm just not able to do it.

That's fair. If you have a neighbor who will take on that chore, maybe he could again in the future if need be?

@Appalachickens that might be a possibility. I really love these chickens and enjoy caring for them.

However, of the 5 original flock from 3 yrs ago, only one is still alive/in good health. She's a different breed than the Cinnamon Queens, so maybe that's why. In the past 3 yrs I've been in a panic state so many times due to these chicken health issues. No matter how many products I buy or how much research I do, I never seem prepared. I also think it's better to have two people to help w/chickens--very tricky with just one pair of hands.

I live in a very harsh climate. Chicken folks here almost never would take a bird to the vet. They would pragmatically cull. I know some who don't even provide a coop!

My plan is that when the oldest passes I'll see if the neighbor can take the remaining two, as it's usually safer/easier to integrate birds to a new flock if more than one. Thanks for all your support during this time.

That does sound hard, and certainly having a second pair of hands makes a difference. I only have one cinnamon queen and she is busy establishing herself as head hen. But my oldest are only 11 weeks old, so I've not had to deal with a lot of illness. But I will say that reading so many posts about various ailments has helped push me toward the idea of working toward having a totally free-range flock of hardy birds that nest in the trees. Yes, some will still die but it will be in the service of producing a stronger breed.
