Help! What's wrong with eye? PIC

Only one eye looks like this. What is wrong and how do I treat her?
No other chickens have any eye issues.
Hoping to make Oakley better quickly.

looks like an eye worm, hard to get rid of. Hopefully someone will post a way to treat this. Good luck

see if you can get vet rx at the feed store without them having to order it. It smells like liquid vicks salve. If you can get it drop 3 drops in the eye. do it for 3 days one week then 2 days the next and keep doing it till it improves. usually takes just a few doses works wonders. you can google it.

Poultry Eye Worms

This worm is very harmful to poultry in the Southern States of the USA .Hawaii , Philippines and other subtropical areas. It is a small white worm that lodges in the corner of a chicken's eye. The eye becomes swollen, inflamed, and watery. Impairing the chickens vision. The eyelids may stick together and the eye may turn cloudy and eventually be destroyed. The chicken may try to scratch the eye to get rid of the irritation.
Eye worms have a indirect cycle. When the worm deposits the eggs in the eye, they pass into the tear duct, they are then swallowed by the chicken and expelled in droppings, and are eaten by the Surinam cockroaches. When the chicken eats the infective cockroach, worm larvae migrates up the esophagi to the mouth thru the tear duct, and into the eye. Wild birds are also infected, and they help spread the Eye Worm to chicken flocks. To control eye worm you must control the cockroaches around the chicken houses.


NOTE THESE BIRDS IF INFECTED AND HANDLED BY YOU CAN LEAVE THE INFECTION ON YOUR CLOTHING OR SHOES AND YOU WILL CARRY IT HOME, OR YOU WILL BRING IT HOME WITH INFECTED BIRDS.


Be sure and never wear the same shoes or clothing to the bird barn that you wear visiting a bird owners barns.
The eggs of the disease are in the fluid of the eye of the infected bird. The bird carries a high fever and the fancier needs to doctor it immediately. Use a medicine called VETRX and put it directly into the eye, around the eye, down the throat, and in the water. Do this three times the first week and twice the second week and should clear it up. Continue to put the VetRx on the eye for 4 weeks

I didn't notice any breathing problems. She was really good when I warm compressed it and used neomycin drops in her eyes. Thought I'd start somewhere. Yuck eye worms!???

I don't think I have anyplace around here that will sell vetrx or wazine. I have safeguard wormer. Should I dose her with that?

I had this go thru my flock last fall. I was brand new to chicks in 07/09, so the foamy eye freaked me out. I noticed that the foamy eye was followed by standing with one leg up, head tucked down and they were usually outside the barn door and never moved. Upon closer inspection, I noticed clear/yellowish snot over their breathing holes and running down into their mouths. I quarentined the sick ones in pet carriers. I lost one bird, and decided that was one to many so I took evasive action. I used Therapy grade cypress oil from Young Living (I am a distributor and had it on hand) and rubbed it with a q-tip on their noses and down their necks until the snot dried up (about 3 days). I also fed them the "sick chicken mash" of cooked oatmeal, yogurt and 6 drops of astragulas/echinesia homeopathic remedy and 3 tbl spoons of molasses. They got this 1/ per day, 3 days in a row then every other day for 2 weeks. It worked. I didn't lose another chicken. It was a lot of tlc and time, but worth it. I have not had another illness in my flock-even after the really hard winter.

UrbanFarmer I'll make up some mash tomorrow and I'll head out to find some cypress oil tomorrow. I know I can find that around here. It's the vetrx and such that can't be found living inside the Capitol Beltway
