I am have an Omlet Eglu Cube with 9ft run coming and I need help deciding where to place it. They will have some fenced off areas to explore and forage during the day but will remain in the attached 9ft run until I open it...

1. Pea gravel area along the back of our house. There is a weed block under the gravel and it is slightly lower level. I can put concrete pavers on them to make a base for the coop? Or sand? Or woodchips on top?

2. Concrete pavers area, I would put ground cover like sand or woodchips in the run.

3. Concrete area on the side of our house. There is a slight grade here towards the fence, also shade from our house roof. I was thinking of putting sand in the run here or woodchips or can I do a deep litter method on concrete?

Any advice or input from the wise, experienced community would be helpful!

There's a lot to consider and only you will know your best opportunity.

Consider where there is shade for protection from heat and swooping of raptors. Also consider where cold winds may come from.

You want a space that's well drained so there won't be mud. Chicken poo that dries is manageable. Poo that stays wet is not.

There are local ordinances about how far it must be from neighbors and structures, of course. Know what they are so you aren't forced to move things when you've got them all set up and learn the ordinances the hard way.

Consider availability of electricity for brooding, supplemental lights (IF you use them; we don't all do that), and keeping water from freezing in the waterers and chickens from cooking in their runs if you will sometimes need fans.

Consider availability of water. Water can get heavy if you have to carry it far so will there be a tap near the coop or a hose that will extend to it?

Consider what landscaping you want to protect from foraging.

Most of all, consider what area will be safe and what you can do to ensure your flock's safety.
