Help Please, My flock of ducks was attacked by three dogs the night before last I had thirteen ducks all of them but 5 were killed. One of them was injured. Not that bad, it was cleaned blue-kote was put on it, and he was put in a cage inside in my house. The other duck, the father of the flock, is severely severely injured we did not see him at all yesterday. He showed up this morning out of the woods, covered in maggots and bugs. He stinks, I have chlorohexidine solution. I'm gonna try to clean him up with. I'm not sure how to use it. I had clavamox, so he was given that I don't know if I gave him enough because I didn't have a dosage. Please help

Maggots are the worst. Although its gross try getting off as many bugs as you can with some tweezers. Flush out the wounds and apply vetericyn (works magic!).

Give hem poultry cell and nutri drench and keep him warm so he can use energy on healing instead of warming himself.

125 mg per kg - do you know how much he weighs in kg?

when i give amoxicillin to a duck that’s around 5 pounds ( approx 2kg) i give 250 mg , twice a day.
i’ll bet your muscovies is bigger than 5 pounds though i don’t have any muskies, but they look pretty big. I hope he’s doing well. You have to make sure you get all the maggots out. You may have to do it several times from what I’ve seen in read in different posts on here you have to keep at it until they’re all gone.

thank you so much. To be honest, I don't really know how he's doing, as I have never been in a situation like this before. My daughter and I were up until 5 o'clock this morning. Bathing him picking maggots off of him with tweezers, drying him off, keeping him warm bathing him again. we got so many off of him, but he is still so infested with them. He has had several several baths in the chloroxidine solution which I am out of now. So I'm going to make a homemade saline solution with salt and water. I found a dosage calculator online for clavamox, so he finally got a full dose. Hes almost seven pounds. We are very hopeful. I have read and researched and researched more to try amd find anything and everything I could possibly do for him, i read some posts that said You need to cut the dead skin off. But I don't know what's dead. What's not where to even cut it at.....I don't want to hurt him. He is breathing very heavily, like panting. Almost and shaking a little bit like his head will shake some. Almost like he has tremors. I don't know if it's just stress. If it's shock, I don't know what to do to stop it. I don't think I have any more tears to cry. He was our first ever duck.
So this is pretty devastating to us. I don't really know what to give him for pain. If there is anything I can I know . he's got to be in pain. He has too many puncture holes to even count.
I'm i'm so worried that I'm just not doing enough for him or I'm doing too much.

give him electrolytes to drink . you can make it homemade with adding a teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt and pinch of baking soda into a cup of water. switch back to plain water every 12 hours. his crate should be in a warm quiet place, &not too much light. i use a room with curtains closed and a towel over part of the crate.
clip off any feathers that are close to and getting into the wounds. as far as dead skin i’m not sure so i’ll tag a few friends @Miss Lydia @azygous @Wyorp Rock @SilverBirds

1. Treat for shock as the number one step. @Jenbirdee thanks for mentioning that. Give warm Gatoraid or mix one teaspoon of sugar into one cup of warm water with a pinch of salt and baking soda. Have the patient drink it all or syringe it into the beak. Dip the beak to show the patient it’s sweet.

2. Flush the wound well with saline or antiseptic wash as you've been doing. You need to wash away the bacteria from the wound. Scrub away all blackened or dead tissue. Live tissue will have a pink color and be warm. Dead tissue will be white or black and be dry and cold.

3. Inspect the wound carefully. If it has a skin flap dangling and it’s still pink and warm to the touch, keep that. Do not cut it off. Look for bite, tear or puncture marks indicating a puncture wound. If you see this, the patient will need an oral antibiotic such as amoxicillin. Bacteria from the predator’s mouth can be injected deep into tissue and can kill in as little as 24 to 48 hours. You may want to try to obtain some amoxicillin from your vet to treat the bacteria that may have been left behind in the puncture wound.

4. Blue kote for large wounds isn't good. It dries out the wounds and you need to avoid that. Use a topical antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin, triple antibiotic ointment without pain killer in it to coat the wound. If there's a skin flap, lay it across the wound that has just been coated with the ointment. Then smooth on a generous amount over the top of the skin flap to hold it in place. Manuka honey is also a good wound treatment for a large wound and will keep it moist.

5. Gently scrub the wound every day with a soft wash cloth following the above steps. This will get rid of any non-viable skin cells that will attract and support bacteria. Keep the wound covered with the ointment. Never allow the wound to get dried out or it will not heal.
