So, we ended up opening a hole, trying to find his beak. He’s been laying there for a few hours now and started rotating and pushing more in the last half hour. He’s breathing hard, and we are wondering if we should help him out all the way or leave him to come out by himself. Will he be able to get out now that we have removed part of the shell or do we need to help him all the way?
Shine a flashlight down his belly, into the pointed end of the egg, and look for yolk. If no yolk, then he is safe to push out -- I'd still let him push out on his own, when he is ready. But if you still see any unabsorbed yolk, definitely don't pull him out yet. Unabsorbed yolk can easily bust, and you most definitely don't want that to happen. Its safest in the shell.
