What are the chances that a hen is laying her first egg at 10 months old?

Backstory - we got this Americana from North 40 in April of last year. She has always been super skittish around us. We have another Americana of the same age that we have been getting eggs out of since August. We NEVER have gotten 2 blue eggs on the same day. I find it hard to believe that they would never lay on the same day at least once in a while. I have never seen this chicken in a nesting box either.

The last couple of days she has been squatting down in a submissive position when I approach her and letting me pick her up and pet her. Now she is sitting in a nesting box right in front of me. I expected 6-8 months. Maybe 10 months isn’t that crazy. Is that normal for this breed? I suspect she is some sort of olive egger. I am super excited because she is by far the prettiest chicken we have!

That's a lovely first egg! :celebrate

She's definitely not an Ameraucana.. though many hatcheries and therefore feed stores (the hatcheries middle men that don't know any difference) will sell easter egger's under that label, often but not always with the same "i" spelling that you used. The Easter Egger's being a fun variety of eye candy is one of the joys of keeping them in our flocks! :love

10 months is not a desirable amount of time before seeing the first egg (in my opinion/experience).. though it's definitely not unheard of. One nice thing about the later layers is *usually* getting full size eggs right from the start rather than pullet size eggs.

Interestingly enough, according to my current understanding.. female chicks are hatched with all of the ova that will even form into eggs already on board..
