I have a hen who isn’t herself this morning. She is moving slowly and just kinda pecking at her food and not eating it really. She is blinking a lot and I noticed some green poop under her vent. Their water grows moss within a day or two of cleaning. She also seems to be flicking her head. Like little twitches. Could that be making her sick? What could I be dealing with!? Help!

Hi,

Green poop sometimes is due to emaciation, which sounds about right since you said she's not eating.

Sure, the water could be making her sick but yet, chickens drink out of mud puddles too.

I would get some vitamins like Poultry Cell or Nutri-Drench for her/their water, and also try some scrambled eggs and mash (wetting her crumbles or pellets) to see if she'll eat either. You could also try some canned tuna in water. Any of these things most chickens will jump for. I wouldn't let her drink any of that water though, give her bottled if possible for a few days.

Is your waterer where the sun can hit it? That will speed up algae growth. Consider getting some RV water refresher for your waterers. We use it in ours to keep the water crystal clear. We got it at Walmart.

Thank you for the feedback! When I get home from work I will start her on those things. I’m not sure if it’s relevant but a couple weeks ago I added 8-9 week old chicks in with the rest of my flock. I’d owned the chicks since they were 2 days old and came from a NPIP small hatchery. They have shown absolutely no signs of sickness but google has me freaking out now 🙁

Green poop usually just means they are not eating enough food. Does she lay eggs? Have you seen any soft egg shells lately? Is she having any feather loss or signs that she is starting to molt? Check her over for any lice or mites, or an enlarged lower belly under her vent. Getting a weight would be good. Summer heat is also hard on them. Is her crop emptying overnight, or how does it feel now? I would give her some electrolytes with vitamins or 2 ml of Poultry NutriDrench orally for a couple of days to give a boost. The foods Debbie listed would be good. Once she has an appetite you can back off to just chicken feed and a bit of egg.

She is not yet laying and no signs like squatting. No feather loss and her crop is pretty much empty. She was pecking at the food but didn’t notice her really trying to get any of it down. She’s closing her eyes and laying down. Just yesterday she was bossing around the new chicks and acting normal. It’s come on so sudden 🙁
I will go through her feathers again but definitely didn’t see anything this morning. She has a tad bit of green under her vent. She is a bantam cochin so lots of fluff.
I have a small collection of medicines. I have ivermectin, Corid, nutridrench, and electrolytes. Should I deworm or corid treatment? Really appreciate your help.

I have ivermectin (cattle) poor on.
I just got home and she’s still moving around but lots more head shaking. I took a video but don’t think I can post it? It kinda looks like something is bothering her and she shakes. I looked all over for anything crawling on her and see none. I did get a picture of her poop.

I might start Corid in case the new ones have exposed her to a new strain of coccidiosis. Do not use any b vitamins during Corid treatment. What do you have for deworming? You can do that as well if it is just an oral dose, and not put in the water.
