I have a 1-year-old easter egger hen with prolapse. It's not a severe case, and it hasn't gotten worse, but I noticed it a few days ago, and it hasn't been improving. I sprayed it with Vetericyn and rubbed some cortisone-10 on it and pushed it back in but it hasn't gotten better. her butt is filthy because of it and every time I wash it it's just as dirty the next day. To add, every time she poops or moves too much it comes back out. I hate to cull her as she's acting perfectly normal otherwise but I don't know how long she can continue like this until she gets a nasty infection or the other birds see it and cannibalize her. I'm willing to rehome her if someone wants to come to pick her up but I'm thinking if there's nothing else I can do it may be better to cull her before I go back to college in a week and 1/2. My father looks after them when I'm not here and he can't provide the constant care she would need. Any Advice?

Good lord, I'd treat her. She's only 1 year old and probably lays colored eggs. And prolapse is very treatable if it's not severe.

Where are you located? If you don't want her, someone else might. Heck, I'll take her if you're anywhere in Northern California.

That's why I made the thread. She's a great hen and perfectly healthy otherwise. I just want to make sure she isn't going to get a nasty infection and suffer more. Is there anything more I can do besides what I've already done and am going to continue to do? I do want to keep her if I can. My birds are my pets and I am only considering euthanasia because I would hate for her to suffer more. I am located in southern New England sadly.

How long have you been treating it?

For a few days. I want to do everything possible to treat her so that I and my family can. I'm sure that it's just because it's early in the treatment but I'm not sure how long she's had it since we got back from vacation on the 4th and I only noticed it on around the 12th. my main concern was her developing an infection. I wash her bum every day and push it back in and apply the cream and vetericyn but I'm not sure if maybe I'm not pushing it back in far enough or if there is something else I should be doing. My real concern is the constant poopy ass to be vulgar.

Are you soaking her in warm soapy or Epsom salts water each day before you clean her up? That is what I would do for a few more days. Try giving her a human calcium tablet with vitamin D each day as well. Then if by the time you are going back to school next week, you could decide to cull or let your dad care for her. Or give her away, but most people would not know how to care for her.
