Hi Everyone ~ it's been a long while since I've posted anything but the forums have always been such a wonderful source of information and knowledge and I thank you all in advance for your help. This may be a bit long so I apologize in advance! I've been raising backyard chickens for about 13 years now but this new issue is definitely a first for me. Right now, I have 6 laying hens - 3 of them are 2 years old and the other 3 are 1 year olds. I have them in separate coops with covered outside runs. A few weeks back, one of my older hens starting having issues with her left leg. At first I thought she may have jumped down from the roost and injured it somehow ~ I've checked her for all of the obvious problems like bumblefoot, mites, etc. and she looks completely fine. I've gave her an Epsom salt bath hoping that might give her some relief. She has been eating, drinking, and laying completely normal but she has to hop around on one foot. I took her to my vet a week ago (that's a first for me!) but I was hoping he could at least examine her to see if she had any swelling, etc. and he couldn't find any outward physical problems (no broken bones, toes, etc.). She's been able to hop around enough to keep up with the other hens when they were free ranging around the yard but now she doesn't even try to come out of the run - she just sits by herself and waits for them to return (so sad). Well now it seems like another one of the older hens is also experiencing some lameness. I noticed this yesterday and last night - I placed her on the roost when I noticed she was just laying on the ground below the roosting bars. The other hen is somehow managing to jump up and roost, using her spread wings for balance. I'm so sorry this is so long but as I've researched online - I came across discussions about Mycotoxins in feed causing lameness and other issues. Has anyone experienced this?
. thank you!
