They are gorgeous - where are they found? Is their genetic background known?

I think all chickens genetics originate from these wild jungle fowl. I looked at chickens in Thailand on Google thinking of moving there.

These are the Red Jungle Fowl who are thought to be the primary ancestor to the domestic chicken. You all can read more on Handy dandy Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_junglefowl

I think they look quite similar to one of the oldest breeds, the Old English Game (black breasted red). The one below has a dubbed comb witch is the breed standard.

That is what I've heard as well. All our chicken breeds came from the wild jungle fowl as you have stated.
