I "heard" leghorn are mean. I don't like the leghorn's personallity anyway. I had a female and she was horrible. AND she ate all the feathers and almost killed herself. She was a stupid chicken. I would have sold her id the dog didn't get her.

This is kind of off topic but if you have a rooster who is (top dog) so to speak and the other rooster has stopped contesting that order does the rooster on the bottom of the order get to mate or not? I have a wyondott rooster and a jersey giant rooster they were both calm tempered roos but a few weeks ago I noticed the jg roo crows no more. So I figure since they have been fighting that the order was established and he accepted his defeat . So I do not even know the jg roo is even there he's quiet stays to the back of the crowd at dinner time and just makes no sound . Is this how it's going to be ?

I think there must be something in the air....maybe it's sprintime coming on and the roo's are just trying to declare their rights....

My roo who is sweet as ever, and has NEVER shown any problems toward me, almost became dinner yesterday. I think it's the temp. change. I've given him one more chance and today he was sweet as pie...

I think it's the weather......

I have a blue & a buff roo together with my hens. The buff will not allow the blue to crow or mate. Poor Vern is at the bottom of the pecking order but he is as sweet to me as can be. When I'm ready to have some offspring from Vern I will separate him with his hens.

We used to have a RIR roo that was so aggressive to people and would not ever back down no matter what we did--fighting back, chasing him for hours, hanging him upside down, carrying him around. He fit nicely in the crock pot with some onions and carrots.

I was feeling really fortunate until this week .. now I have a nasty flogging young roo who is being rough with the girls too!

I threatened him with freezer camp last nite ..

Hopefully it's the weather, time of year .. whatever. He needs to CHILL .. or he's going in the CHILLER!

get a std cochin roo. they are docile, fluffy and gentle.
i have plenty of different breeds of roos, i have found that the breeds that are breed for laying will get aggressive. thats why i never keep a layer roo. i once had a blk giant pair, the hen got killed then the roo started attacking everything that moved. we raised these chickens from eggs. they were handled daily. he would chase my parents, my husband, people walking down the road, and even our dogs. the only ones he would not chase and attack was my daughter and myself.
get rid of that roo, before he causes more damage.

I flattened the dumby, first of all when I opened the coop door all the chickens came out to greet me. Well they came out and I went in and closed the door behind me. score one for me! I did what I had to do. When I came out the roo in mention was doing his normal, I'm eating but not letting you move trick. If I walk he attacks. Well this time I had the waterer in my hand and he went for my feet, under the waterer. well I just set the waterer on top of him and held on tight and yelled at him. I didn't let go until he stopped moving. He was panting and his "girls" were all surrounding him pecking at him while I was holding him down. finally he gave up, I removed the waterer and he stayed right there, didn't move a muscle, till I started walking away, then he took off like a big bird into the coop. No chasing me now!!!! I'm going to go check on the dumby in a little bit to make sure I didn't give him a heart attack. Hopefully now he'll show some respect. Hopefully he'll understand to respect my family too. If not this Alpha Hen will freezer him.

As for getting other roos, I'll give then a try. After all I know how to send them to freezer camp and have no problem doing so. The last one who thought he knew best became chicken spagetti!

and Texasgal, I'm thinkin that it is something with spring!

Tammyd..., this roo that we're talking about was under my other one that went to freezer camp in Jan. and now he's taking over. but none of my other roos (2) crow very much and if they do WHAM! they get it. Same goes for me. If I "crow" WHAM! I get it.

I didn't read all the post, but w/mine hanging with the feet didn't work, nor holding him down. So I went out with a broom he came at and I hit him with the broom before he could get me. I did this for a while then tried it without the broom and he was good, until I went to slowly kick an apple out of my way so I could open the door. (my mistake) So back to the broom, and he watches me, but will not attack.

Some might say it is mean, that I play baseball or golf w/roo, lol but it is either me or him, and it isn't gonna be me!
