Hi! First time chickens.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

I have raised and bred silkies for the past eight years and won't venture out to any other breed. They have so many varieties, like frizzle, cuckoo, chocolate, splashes, paints, etc. that breeding them is like a science project to figure out what I want to wind up with lol.

They can't run very fast or fly for squat, get snowbound (stuck in snowbanks) very easily, but they are the most beautiful, loving chickens.

You will need ramps, but maybe not roosts. We pulled ours out as they like to sleep on the nest boxes or that railing in front of them, and a couple like to sleep on the ramp. Here's our first coop when it was brand new so you can see what I mean by ramps. I should get new pictures as there's a 2nd row of nests below now with a side ramp for them to get to it.

Getting ready to embark upon my first backyard chicken adventure. My daughter and I are planning on converting the treehouse that she is outgrowing into a chicken coop. We are still in the planning and searching stage. We heard silkies were a good type of chicken to look for. We live in Oakland. Thanks for having us in your backyard chicken community and nice to meet you all :)
Hello and welcome :frow
