Hi from 'Oz'

Thank you for the warm welcome.

We are just starting to head into winter which gets bitterly cold where we live. So any advise for keeping my lot comfortable would be appreciated. Actually, any advise would be happily welcome.

I work full time and my chickens (and vege garden) are my therapy for the hectic and stressful days I have.

Our average temperature in winter is around 5 degrees c, it can get as low as -5, we have heavy frosts and around 12 - 15 days of snow.

So I have no idea why I know this, but the conversion from C to F is C x 1.8 + 32 = 41 F. I am sure thats cold for the Aussies but not in general. I would think any chicken with the exception of the more exotic game birds or breeds from tropical regions would do fine by you. The key is humidity. Chickens can tolerate temperatures way chillier that you get as long as its a dry cold. Ventilate the coop to get rid of moisture. My coop got down to 0 F many times this year. That would be -32 C and they did fine. I try to keep the humidity level < 60%.
