Hi everyone. Looking forward to getting to know fellow chicken lovers. My family has always kept a small flock alongside our horses, cattle and goats. Nearly 50 years total. My family favored RhodeIsland Reds for egg production. I decided to mix things up a bit about 10 years ago and have raised a variety of egg layers. But I fell in love with the Ameraucana and Easter Eggers. My small flock has recently hit the age where I am loosing many to old age. So I jumped into the deep end of the pool and built an entirely new indoor coop in my heated horse barn and doubled the size capacity. My original coop is a small freestanding little building just outside of my barn. I have changed this to a chick raising or isolation use coop. It is insulated with electricity and has an adjoining 10x10 greenhouse style patio. Sealed with clear panels in winter to provide a snow-free area to hangout and get some sunshine. In the other three seasons the panels come off and provides a nice shady spot with good ventilation. I have a fenced chicken yard to protect from predators and overhead wire strands to prevent flying predators such as hawks, owls, falcons and eagles. We have a lot of all of these. I am expanding my flock and have added 4 Easter Egger pullets at the beginning of winter. They are laying already! I have 4 Easter Egger female chicks and 2 random straight run bantam chicks about 3 weeks old now and will receive 3 more Splash Ameraucana female day old chicks next week. Can’t wait to see how these all turn out! I love the bold sweet personalities in the more compact size, beautiful variety of feather colors and patterns and great egg production. Just fun mixed colored eggs year round!
