Hey, I have a suggestion, if you just want to start with a few adult chickens. You can read this article I wrote:

Welcome to BYC, and good luck in starting your flock. Australorps are a great breed. Start with a minimum of 3. The problem with chicks is that you might get cockerels - even with sexed chicks.

Thank you , Isn't the closed box you suggested difficult to breathe in?I can actually drill holes in the box

Leave the lid off and put a screen over it.
Better yet, do not use plastic at all. It is too hot.
If you use a dog kennel, you'll need to put cardboard or wire around the bottom, or the chicks will walk right through the bars.

Chicks/chickens need copious amounts of fresh air. I would use a brooder plate and a (HUGE) wire dog crate wrapped in chicken wire if the holes/slots are too big.

Hi and welcome! If you get chicks then you can at least be certain that they're young. Also, they're lots of fun to play with and take care of, especially if you only get a few. I find 3-5 chicks at a time is easy to care for.
