Meeting a bear on a hike is one of my worst fears, particularly with my two talkative dogs.

Glad you came out of that encounter all right!
Me too. my stupid dog decided to chase it up a tree (he wouldn't come and I wasn't about to go get him) so I'm guessing this is it's first spring by itself. It's good for it to learn to avoid the trails and the edge of town.
This trail runs down into a ravine and back up in a hairpin curve.
I didn't see it because I was looking down the ravine where there were vultures and a live elk cow grazing like nothing was wrong, so I assumed the vultures were there for elk afterbirth.
it never occurred to me there was another reason for the vultures to be there. I was looking for a elk calf and not uphill where it was. The live cow was only about 30 yards from the bear.
As I was coming up the hill, I heard a ripping noise and looked up hill.
Here's from where I retreated up hill.

That's so cool! I'd be crapping my pants but at the same time, what an amazing encounter!

May be a good time to remind fellow hikers about bear language and how to recognize their signals ;)

Talkative dogs might be enough to keep a bear at bay. They're shy and would rather avoid trouble so if they hear or smell dogs around, they'll likely quietly retreat or watch from a safe distance.

I typed in bird just now and got a million videos of the dogs playing hahahaha Brew and family and friend’s dogs LOL but apparently my phone thinks those are birds???????? I also got a random picture of a rabbit as a bird. Maybe the videos have sounds of birds in them cause most are outdoors? Only thing I can think of. But the bunny, who knows. 🤣😭

Went on the marsh today. Not exactly a “hike” but still different than our normal walks lol and some of the terrain was pretty uneven due to the way the mud settles out there and by the time we were on the way back, my calves hurt from balancing hahahaha
