I am planning on feeding my girls Scratch & Peck Organic Layer Pellets (16% protein) once my pullets start laying (I have to get through the home-made food I made, then they will all probably eat chick starter). I will give them kitchen scraps, meat cuttings, and black soldier fly larvae to up the protein. My daughter pet sat for a flock that was on this diet. Multiple deformities, early death, breathing issues - just buy high quality commercial feed with 20% protein. Your hens will pick out what they want with a grain/seed mix, so you will need a pelleted feed. My daughter and I felt terrible for them and ended up purchasing chick starter feed for them.
