Homestead at 7,600’

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

We are up at 7,000 ft as well down here in New Mexico, weather can be challenging for sure!

Make yourself at home here and welcome to our community!

When I tell people I garden at 7,600, I often get that “nod” that says: you’re crazy for even trying, but I admire your determination! There are days that I open the coop and the birds stare at 18” of snow. Then they make that descending “brrrr…” trilling sound of disapproval, turn on their heels and return to roost. 🤣

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Loved the intro! We're glad you're here!

Hi see you’re a “silkie mom”. I stumbled into having two silkies in my flock this year. I will do my best to peacefully integrate them with my standard birds. If I can’t, I will diligently search for a more appropriate silkie home. They are such sweet and funny birds, I just want them to be happy and not be bullied. 🐣 They look like the ladies from ABBA in their bell bottom days. I see them and can’t help singing “she’s the dancing queen!”

Yes you never know when you will wake up to a foot or more of snow, clear skies the night before, clear skies that morning! 😂 Snow will always be a scary monster to avoid for chickens. :gig

One of my favorite songs! I just aged myself. Oh wait, you did that. :lau

I gave two adult silkies to a friend last summer. She brought them back after a week saying her adult hens, about 15 of them, were relentlessly picking on them, backing them into corners where they'd huddle together, never daring to turn around. I used to think there was safety in numbers for them, and maybe there is, but I've learned that 2 to 15 won't work. Maybe try to get about three more?
