The short of it, we had a devastating start to our week with two neighborhood dogs breaking into our backyard and killing our chickens. We had only one survivor and we didn’t know it until she came clucking back into our yard in the evening looking for a place to roost.
After weeping over our sweet birds, and filing a report with animal control (apparently this is the their dogs 4th incident devastating neighbors pets and livestock), we realized we had 8 eggs semi-recently laid as the girls had just finished molting. In a last ditch effort to perhaps hatch a chick from our beloved flock, we’ve borrowed a Nature Right from a friend and I’ve begun incubating the eggs in my classroom as a fun project for my 4th graders. I know it’s a long shot and the eggs aren’t all ideal, some are dirty or not quite the ideal shape, but I hope that we at least get one little chick.
I thought I’d share it here. I’m hopeful to get one little chick. All our birds were wonderful, our little Roo especially. I’d actually be thrilled beyond measure if we ended up with a roo that was a son of his. He had the best temperament. All of the eggs if they hatch would be half Orpington as our roo was a buff Orp.
We are on day two, here are the pictures of my eggs and our incubator. The friend I borrowed it from recommended a dry hatch, as we live in a very humid environment.
They all laid similar looking eggs, but the potential crosses are:
Buff Orp Roo x:
Silver Lace Wyandotte
Barred Rock
Speckled Sussex (we had 2 of these)
Rhode Island Red
Buff Orp
Golden Sex-Link
Here’s to hoping
