How are egg sizes determined?

Is there a set size in ounces or length that determines whether an egg is medium, large, x-large according to grocery store standards? Thanks!

There are USDA standards based on the weight of a dozen eggs, so divide by 12 for each egg in the dozen.

Minimun weights per egg

Jumbo = 2.5 oz = 70.87 grams
XLarge = 2.25 oz = 63.79 grams
Large - 2 oz = 56.70 grams
Medium - 1.75 oz = 49.61 grams
Small = 1.5 oz = 42.52 grams
Peewee = 1.25 oz = 35.44 grams

Multiple by 12 to get the weight per dozen
