How do I make my chickens a flock?

I have read different things saying you need 5-1 to 10-1 ratio. I have many (probably too many) young roos that flock together with hens, and so far I have only had a few fights, mainly when they thought they could take big poppa's hen!! Mine are all free range though, don't know if that makes a difference?
