How do you deal with the chicken haters?

But, my real answer would be: Because the chickens give me so much JOY, and make my heart happy, that is why.

I went from parents who thought we were absolutely crackers for moving out of town (and onto a farm in desperate need of rehab), getting chickens, gardening, putting up food...to a mom who 3 years later, commends me for my moves toward self-sufficiency and just "ordered" 6 chicks to be added to our flock so she has some of her own to visit.

Never underestimate the power of a Discovery Channel program about global catastrophe. Scared the chickenpoop out of my city-living mom. Now she's sucking up so she has somewhere to go when the infrastructure fails and we're the only ones with food, water, power, etc.

If it helps my family thinks I have gone to the birds

as well. Good news is that DH is LOVING the baby chicks and I am sure baby ducklings that we are hatching and although he doesn't "get" it he really wants to be able to have food on our property.

My mom told me that I dont need any chickens. Maybe I dont NEED them, but they make me happy. It doesnt matter how old you get, moms will always put their 2 cents in.
