The thread title pretty much says it all. How high can a chicken with clipped wings jump? I want to be able to maximize the space in their run, which is ~6ft tall, by placing a couple roosting bars around it. How high would be too high for them to reach? They are SLW.

Are both wings clipped on each bird? Both vs. just one allows better compensation and increases their range.

I haven't decided yet whether to do just one or both. I'm waiting till they're old enough to free range to clip. If I were to clip both would they be able to make it over our 6ft fence? If so, I'll just do one. There are mean dogs next to us which is the whole reason I'm going to be clipping in the first place.

Depends on breed. My big Golden Comets can hop into raised coop 18 inches with hardly a wing flap. They can fly about 2 1/2 feet high, up to about 5 feet in length, when they see me, expecting a treat. Of course if they were frightened, that could be a whole other story.
Their wings are not clipped and they're nearly 15 months old. GC

Had a RIR at 4.5 weeks almost make it to the top of the 6 foot fence. She tried. The dogs on the other side were rooting for her.

So we are planning on clipping one wing tomorrow. The lid is not going as well as planned.

Properly clipped a chicken will not be able to jump more than 24" high. One wing lift intact will allow a higher jump depending on how well the other wing is clipped. Properly clipped means both wings cropped closely.

How old do my chickens have to be to clip their wings? And also do chickens Molt with different season's?
