How long do hens lay small eggs?

Our first hen to lay eggs (at 4 1/2 months old ) layed what I believe are called “pullet “size eggs we now have 3 layers and the flock is over 5 months old and all 3 are laying only “pullet” eggs - we weigh them (1.3 to 1.6 oz) Our last flock of chickens from 6 years ago only layed maybe 1 0r 2 pullet eggs - then full sized eggs from then on....we now have about 3 dozen because each hen is laying every other day....IS THIS NORMAL? Does it signify any deficiency? They get the same feed/water as our last flock

The change will be gradual. Usually pullet eggs are for about a month or two. Since yours started so early it may be at the top end of that.
Some egg farms keep pullets on low light for a longer period so their bodies are in better condition by the time they increase light (which kick starts laying) which makes first eggs larger.

In a lifetime of keeping chickens I've only had one bird whose first egg was large and they stayed large/xlg her whole life till a mink killed the nice ameraucans when she was 6 or 7.

My pullets have been laying about a month, some longer than others. Some of the eggs are getting bigger, slowly, but we are not "there" yet. My older Cuckoo Marans lays a ginormous brown egg with dark speckles, and I show it to my juveniles. "See this, you slackers? Now THERE is an EGG! Let's get with the program! Step to it! I know where the crock pot lives!" But they just give me the jaded side eye and the afternoon purr and be like, "you cook us, you ain't got NO eggs, you silly old woman, so there!" And I mumble something about getting on the stick and shuffle off to my hovel.
