Hi, all. My chickens have free range of our fenced in 1.2 acre around our house. A few nights ago, my son heard squawking and went out to investigate. There was a strange dog in our yard (who got in through a broken slat in the fence we found out the next day) chasing our chickens around in the nighttime. My son chased it out the gate finally and shut the gate back and said he didn't have a chicken in his mouth when he left. Out of 14 chickens, we have about 9 (one roo and 8 hens) that are still here and very traumitized. How long does it take the survivors to recover? By day the're hiding under a pop up by our driveway, at night they still go into the coop but they're not NEAR the friendly, run-to-me chickens they used to be. Now they won't even come out from under the pop up when I go out to feed them, although the feed is always gone the next day. And I do see the remaining hens eating and getting water occassionally.

It doesn't sound like you lock them up at night. They would start to feel safe again if you lock them in the coop where nothing can get to them at night, let them have run/yard access during the day. Then they'll expand their range away from the coop more and more so long as the coop is the safe place.
