How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I found 5 eggs in the nest this morning, and that's 5 out of 5 hens. I had to cull one of my hens a few days ago. She was dealing with waterbelly, wasn't laying eggs and was acting pretty normal so I had planned to just let her remain a part of the flock. But when she started aggressively picking feathers from her sisters and eating them I decided she had to go.

I’m sorry you had to get rid of her. I hope none of your other girls get ascites. This is the second of your flock isn’t it? Will you be adding more birds next year?

Yes, this is the second hen that's developed ascites, and I'm not sure if I'll ever get any more. I might give raising rabbits a try when most of the chickens are gone.

I understand. Keeping chickens has been rather stressful for us, so we’re also considering not adding anymore to our flock in future.

8 yesterday but one had to be tossed bc there was poop on it and I'm not about that life.

In all this time (less than 2 months lol) it was the first egg that ever had poop on it so I'm impressed with my clean ladies in all honesty.

Yep, don’t go down that rabbit hole - trust me. They are more trouble than hens. I raised rabbits (and showed them) as a kid. They are way more work than chooks.

Might I suggest that instead of production breeds you get more traditional breeds like Orpingtons or Marans even.

Those poor production breeds just wear themselves out

Yep - I hear ya. I wash eggs every night. Poopy eggs…. Yep I have that life

Today I got another dozen, 4 need washing, yay! And I better get at it!
