How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

None today!

Juin sat in the nestbox all afternoon, but had no luck.

Another pair of eggs today. The girls have eaten half the leaves from the big parsley plant I put in their run yesterday, and I tossed them the last of the edible tomatoes I had stored in the shop.

11 eggs. Cold today, snowy. The ladies will likely slow down laying now.

8 today, none in the "shed" nest.

Sophia, my sneaky Maran, made a godawful mess of the nests today, spent most of her day messing with the nests and sitting on the nests and no eggs.

I'm a first time chicken keeper and first time winter -- they are still very young, Sophia is all of 23 weeks old.

One broken shell-less egg in the roost when I opened the coop. I got a thin-shelled egg before work. Didn’t realize it was thin, until I placed it in the rack and was lowering it to the second level and it broke.

What is going on?

Just normal stuff. What you think is a good nest is not what they think. I throw stuff in the box and let them make their own nest. Or they kick it out if they don’t like it.

I give them different options of shavings in one, straw in another, mix of straw and shavings, and so on.

I have one that insists on laying in my junk wheelbarrow, I use as a junk bin, currently has a bunch of old horse blankets she loves! I haven’t had the heart to chuck the blankets because she lays there.

Then there are the ones who think my paper recycling bin is awesome, so now it’s a nest box rather than recycling.

I have found eggs on top of my hay and straw piles, on the Hen House floor, on the night time roosting ledges…. Hidden between two stored gates. It’s an Easter egg hunt daily at my place!

And my OEGB bantam pullet is once again laying in a secret location that I have yet to find!

So far today none that I know of - work sure gets in the way of my chicken time!
