How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

The sardines arrived this morning. I gave the flock the sardines chopped up with some fresh broccoli and canned pumpkin. They loved it. They love salmon, too.

I don't typically give them fish but they're molting so it's some extra protein. They can't free range (too many predators) so they depend on us for variety in their diet, too.

I envy the photos of flocks ranging all over big green lawns! Some day...

That is great they like it.
Me too give them extra protein when they molt.

For the fish, Ive used can mackerl (bones are super soft mushy) like I would use the can sardines. Never tried it for the birds. Its a raw food option for my dogs/cat. cost wise mackerl (bigger can) would be cheaper then what sardines exsculate at times.

Sparrow Hawk cleared all the wild birds out of the horse barn, which means the sparrow hawk moved to a different hunting ground where the wild birds have gone.

Its that time of year that my hens that will hatch a nest start finding their places. Red Hen has returned to the horse barn. Saw her today looking for her spot. And I had wondered if the hen that the sparrow hawk chased off might still be in the hay barn. Wonder through there looking for signs. My Presa pup found her well protected in a space surrounded by 4x4x8 bales.,, Huge Huge growl from the hen at the pup lol lol Not an easy place for the chicks to get out of, Ive seen momma birds carry the babies on there backs to move them out of places like my old metal livestock water tanks that are high walled Ill keep an eye on her. Happy to see these two girls ready to get busy. One silly hens actully laid an egg in the stray cat area.. LOL..

Two eggs today from Brelly and little Marzo! Now all my pullets are laying! :wee

Here’s Marzo, looking triumphant!

And here’s her cute little somewhat pointy egg!

Despite being the same breed as my Juin and from the same hatchery, her eggs are much more beige while Juin’s is more of a cream. I think Marzo’s is more correct for a Dominique, but I am just glad to have a slightly different color to add to my egg basket, and I like that I can tell them apart! :)

Here’s Marzo’s egg, Juin’s first egg, and the one Juin laid yesterday for comparison. You can definitely see the difference between hers and Marzo’s!

One funny thing about my Dominiques is how their voices changed dramatically once they got close to laying. Initially they were soft and infrequent little squeaks, and then they become loud, demanding and incessant. If Juin wants something she screams at the top of her lungs and it sounds like the maniacal laughter of Vizzini in The Princess Bride, while Marzo alternates between high and low notes like a tiny donkey breying into a megaphone, lol. I love them!

I don’t let my gang free range without me watching them, too many predators. I let them out when I am working in the barn.
