How often do they lay eggs in the beginning?

We were so excited to get our first egg a week ago from our 20 week old hen. It was small, but perfect, and laid in the nest box. We haven't seen another one since though. We've checked other areas she can go to just in case she laid somewhere else, and her run is very predator proof so I don't think she has tried to lay another one.

When she laid the first egg, she was constantly going in and out of the coop for about a week and half as if she didn't know what to do. We haven't noticed this type of behavior since she laid it last week.

Is there a typical laying pattern in the beginning or are they all different?

We are first timers. With a mixed flock 2red sexlinks 4 white leghorns 2 rir and one black sexlink with 1 rir roo
both rsl layed there first eggs a half hour apart 4 days shy of 16 weeks 26th of july. both have layed an egg a day untill yesterday. one had layed a jumbo double yoker the day befor and took a day off( per her union contract LOL)
the rir's and leghorns started laying around 18 weeks one leghorn and the bsl haven't started ase of yet there all 5 months old tomorrow.
6 to 7 eggs a day at this point

One of my hens laid 6 eggs in her first week of laying, another hen has laid 2 eggs in her first week of laying, another one of my hens lays every other day. They are all buff orpingtons, so my vote is that they are all different.

I'm so jealous! I was hoping it was just sporadic in the beginning. I guess I'll have to give her a little pep talk tomorrow.

I am new to this also. Our oldest hen started laying on Monday. She is a NHR. She has layed an egg everyday so far. So I hope this continues, but I am guessing they are all somewhat different. Good Luck!

I have 24 hens and only half are laying at this time. They started 2 weeks ago. I am surprised at how noisey the hens have become while they are in laying mode. I was worried the roo would be too loud.

My only laying chicken started on sunday last week. I collected this morning and she has now given us 5 this week. She was an incredibly late layer at 30 weeks though. I'm hoping for those 5 a week. Once my 3 other girls lay, its just what my family would eat in a week.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Funny twist to our situation, while the girl that was the reason for starting this post still hasn't laid another egg, one of our "roosters" just laid "his" first egg today!

We were never quite sure if it was a boy or girl, but she had such a large red comb and it started really early that we always thought it was a boy. Just shows you never know until an egg is laid!

LUCKY!!!....

I hear you. I wanted all layers but there was slim pickings a TSC.
They only had straight run RIR's. I wanted brown egg layers. I bought 3 hoping for a least one hen. Well as the grew it wasn't long before I new one was a roo and one was a hen. the third has a much larger comb than the hen but wasn't nearly as big as the roo. Well the mystery bird started laying about a week after the for sure hen.
