how old do my chicks need to be?

I am a total newbie. What is grit? Is that different from the chick starter (which is gritty)? If I feed them the chick starter, can I give them some salad or fruit treats?

Momaroo: chick feed has no grit in it. Grit is the stones they use in their gizzard to grin the food, like our teeth do. You can give them sand for them to use as grit if your are going to give them anything other then the chick starter.
