My eldest rooster has been getting his comb devoured by the local carnivorous midge population. I've treated the coop with diatomaceous earth, especially the dust bath area, but they free range during the day. Should I do any other treatment? Will anything keep them away from him while he's out and about?
(Also it's almost exclusively my two roos because they have huge, warm combs for all the fun blood-suckers to latch onto. My hens are mostly pea-combed, but even the ones with uppity combs don't get bothered.)
