I purchased 3 black jersey giant hens, 3 Rhode Island red hens, amd 15 mystery birds. I'm new to both breeds I ordered and most other breeds. I was hoping to only get three black chicks so I could tell them apart - but I have lots of black ones. Can someone help me tell the breeds?

If you could help me identify these or just tell me know to identify my jerseys I would be so happy.

You only have 3 pics.

How many black chicks do you have?

Did you put on the green leg bands, or did they come that way?

Where did you purchase these from?

I’ve raised BJG for several years. Black Australorp look very similar as chicks.

A BJG has a single comb, with slate (grey-black) legs. The bottoms of the feet (and possibly into the space between the toes) should be yellow in some manner. This is an identifying trait on BJG and is noted in the standards for the breed.

The body shape of a BJG chick should be of a larger frame (not heavier at this point) as compared to the other chicks. You have a hatchery BJG, so it may not be as obvious -I’m not familiar with Cackle stock.

As BJG age and grow, there are other differences. But, for now, check combs and legs and that should help. If ALL your black chicks have single combs and black legs…some may be Australorps. But color of the foot bottoms should be different between them.

In your pics, your top chick does not look like a BJG or Australorp. The bottom 2 could be.
