How young is too young to play "Pullet or Cockerel?"

I wouldn't be too quick to get rid of "him". I'm going to disagree with the others and say that you might have a pullet. The comb, though perhaps a little large, isn't red yet. I'm leaning towards pullet.

Of course, I could be wrong. But, this is my guess.

Nothing would make me happier, and I really do hope you're right!

He is such a funny looking thing though - I think he looks like a velociraptor sometimes. I kind of 'feel' he may be a boy - he's very upright which doesn't really show too well in these pictures, and the comb does worry me. He is also a bit naked-looking and has hardly any feathers to speak of, lol. Either way he will have a good life though - if not with me, then at my brother's farm - he needs a new rooster.

I will post some more pictures in a couple of weeks and we can all have another go at it. I also have a batch of 5 chicks which are 2 days old (I did have 6 but one passed this morning) and no doubt I will be chasing guesses at their gender too! At least with them, I can compare them to each other. Peepers is on his own so it's harder.

Thanks!

Hi everyone!

Here are some updated pictures of Peepers at 4 weeks and 3 days of age. He is a BO x RIR and has been slow to get his feathers, but now has some to show off! As he/she is an only child I have nothing to compare him/her to.

However, I am getting the sense that he/she is more boy than girl. The pink-ish-ness of the comb worries me the most. Or is this normal?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Krista

I'm leaning more towards cockerel now, with that pink comb and developing wattles.

I'm also thinking cockerel now.

Yeah. Funnily enough, the day after this chick was hatched, he stood up and I said to my hubby "It's a boy." Hubby didn't understand and said that there was no way I could possibly tell that, but the chick has exactly the same stance as his Dad does! He stands really upright, on his HUGE stalky legs, and did right from Day 1. I am not surprised everyone concurs he is a boy. The massive feet, long legs, pink comb, upright stance - I just knew it!

How sad that I will have to rehome him. At least I know where he is going - to my brother's farm - so he will have a good life regardless. I will miss him though, as he is my first raised chick.

It's so funny that people say BO's are hard to sex. This chick is 4 weeks old and screamed boy to me right from the start. Mind you, he is only half BO I guess.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I have another batch of five, week-old chicks, at the moment so no doubt in time I will be back with some new pictures.
