Hudson, Wisconsin! (St. Croix County)

No one can deny a silkie!!!! I could bring one ill just give her a bath first :)
Good news the meeting has been postponed to JUNE 3rd at 7pm because the mayor moved it back due to two council members not being able to attend next Monday's meeting. So mark your calendar for June 3rd at 7pm!

As for what to say - I can help write up a lil' blurb or something short. We (our group) was talking about how great it would be to have a super MELLOW hen come to the meeting lol...

Thanks for starting this thread! Going to follow along; maybe we will have a few ladies in the backyard this spring. Need to do some thinking and planning!

Hi everyone! The first DRAFTED ordinance is being reviewed THIS Thursday (6pm) at the Public Safety Committee Meeting. The link for me was tricky and only showed the first page. I had to go into my internet settings and change the view to "continuous" in order to see the whole ordinance. It's LONG. So much for keeping it "simple".

There are already a few things I am planning to bring up before the council... such as COOP HEIGHT... 6'6" is not going to cut it for us. If that is the max height for the OUTSIDE measurement my husband will not be able to walk into the coop and stand up. If someone does a RAISED coop - you're taking away 2' right there. It says either it has to be 24" off the ground or it has to be on a foundation of pressure treated wood or concrete, etc.

Also, for 5 chickens - 30sq ft for coop size is good - but 40sq ft for the run size is small. They are stating 3sq ft per chicken coop size (4sq ft per chicken minimum is what is generally recommended) and 10sq ft per chicken for run space is a MINIMUM that is recommended - our ordinances states LESS than that for our MAXIMUM. PPPPFTT! So apparently our city wants to be seen as "yes we are allowing chickens but we don't care about them being properly housed". Yet a dog kennel run in our city's code can be a MINIMUM of 140sq ft! Also a tool shed in the city can be 12' high. Nearly double the height of what our coops can be...

There are a lot of other things that are bothering me about it but for now these are the big ones...

Public Safety Meeting was tonight and the draft ordinance was read. We succeeded with increasing the maximum coop height from 6' 6" to 8'. And succeeded with increasing run size from 40sq ft to 50sq ft. We did not succeed in reducing the property line setback from 10' to 5' (there is still a 25' setback from adjacent dwellings) nor did we get supervised free range time. But those are things we can ask for after the trial is up. Fees will be $50 first year and $20 renewals. Overall we're really happy with how the ordinance turned out. If the city attorney can make these changes in time then it will hit common council at the end of this month fir the first official reading. As long as no changes are made we already know we have 3 Yes votes out of 5 council members so we should get a PASS :) They are limiting it to 15 permits for the 1 year trial. After that it's open to anyone.
