Hello,
My lavender orpington always seems to have lice every season. I treat her with this lice cat product and it works very well as I haven't seen any lice on her for a few weeks now.

However, she has tons of HUGE lice nits everywhere on her (under the wings, neck, around her vent) although they all seem to be dead nits.

Is there any way to dissolve or remove these nits ? Are they ever just going to fall ?

Any advice would be helpful.

A photo would be good, however if the nits are dead I would recommend a bath (no not you !!!)
I occasionally bath my girls using Johnson’s baby shampoo. To be honest Tilly, my only pure white hen, loves it. To the extent I’m sure she actively searches out oil, grease, and sticky anything so that she can spend an afternoon in a big sink of luke warm water and be pampered.
I draw my line at the massage though 😂

Hey !
Thank you for the advice. I could definitely try a bath although i am certain she won't like it! The nits are really matted to her feathers and im unsure soap would deloge them, but a bath might help with her general cleanliness.
I just removed feathers (she hated it) and it's really gross how huge these nits are

What product is that....got a link?

Might need a better lice killer and get them before that many eggs are laid(it's a lot of eggs, from a long time infestation).
Yes, she had multiple lice infections they also seem to come back and especially on her. My other hens never had it this bad as her.

I was gone this winter and my family was taking care of the flock, when I came back I found this huge infestation on her and she got real weak from it. Managed the infestation with the Hartz Flea and Tick spray.

She got lice again back in May and again managed it with the same product.
I am guessing all the dead nits are remnants from these infestations. Nothing is alive on her right now, Im just trying to manage these disgusting nits everywhere.

Maybe she just isn't as good at cleaning herself as my other hens but she is always the single one with infestations, the others sometimes get a few ones here and there but they manage it well with sand baths. The coop is clean and I treat it with Dr Doom from time to time.

This is my information on the life cycle which should help you work out when to repeat the treatment;

eggs hatch in 4-5 days,
immature (nymph) stages take 3-4 days

Therefore time from first lay of egg to adult is 7 to 9 days

I don’t remember whether I repeated the treatment a week later so perhaps someone else can recommend a frequency level of ivermectin treatment?

Hope this helps
