I met a lady while shopping this morning, she was selling gourd art…..bought one cute kitchen chicken gourd. Told her I have real ones, she showed me a phone pic of a rooster that adopted her and asked me to identify it. All I could think of was the one on the Corn Flakes box, maybe a leghorn? I invited her to join BYC and someone would know for sure. She thought we are only about chickens, and she has only ducks and the one new adopted rooster. Got to give promo for the group and hope she joins us.

I'm pretty sure it was a brown leghorn rooster…but flunked the pop quiz because all I have is a flip phone

Then guess I flunked twice….thanks so much, gotta get my breed books out to study. Never know when I'll get tested again.

I told her y'all could help with id of her knew pet rooster. Thanks so much.

If it makes you feel better, Welsummers and Light Brown Leghorns are often confused - the differences are there when you know what you are looking at/for, but they are two very commonly confused breeds.

This chicken? This is a Welsummer? I need one. Green and red?
I think Kelloggs got it backwards, It's red and green, but I like it. I thought they just made it up.

The current picture on the Kellogg's Corn Flakes box is a cartoon parady of the original rooster which was a Welsummer named Cornelius. There are a number of sources that document the breed of the original rooster. Some examples are:
"Every morning as a kid I ate cornflakes and I never knew the Kellogg's Corn Flake Rooster, "Cornelius" was a Welsummer. I do remember thinking he was such a wonderful rooster." http://welsummers.blogspot.com/p/facts.html
"They're (Welsummers) the rooster portrayed on the cornflakes box, and their colors are stunning." http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/Welsummer-B108.aspx
"Representations of cockerels in the media are often based upon the "classic" Welsummer look. The most common example of this would be the Kelloggs Cornflakes rooster." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsummer
"Even more ironic is that a Welsummer rooster, Cornelius, is the guy who graces the Kellogg's cornflake box, instead of an American breed like a Buckeye or a Rhode Island Red." http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/2012/05/late-nate-and-cornflake-our-little.html
I definitely agree with you though that the current cartoon parady of Cornelius (Corny for short) has lost a lot of the detail and the colors of the Welsummer upon which it was originally based has certainly been corrupted.)

Wow, so much education here. Thanks. The more I see, I do think the ladies chicken was a brown leghorn roo and in my inexperience, lucked up?

But I love cornflakes. Haven't eaten those in years…think I'll buy some soon.

I like corn flakes as well. I'm not a big cereal eater, but when I do eat it, corn flakes is one of my favorites. Enjoy!)
