Is there any way to encourage the egg shell color? I have a Cayuga and I would love to have a black egg but she lays white- at first they were greenish but they weren’t very pretty (I want to drain one and keep it).
You would have to find another bird that already lays another dark egg. Depending on their age, they can have very dark eggs in the first year. Our Ancona ducks are in the extended black family (same as your cayuga) and some lay very dark ashy eggs and some lay white or light/dark green. Certainly mating one darker egg duck with another will eventually lead to some dark eggs in the extended black family.
Is it only in the first year that they will lay dark eggs?
Found some science behind it too if you wanna read. You would have to find another bird that already lays another dark egg. Depending on their age, they can have very dark eggs in the first year.
