I threw a copperhead snake to the chickens-was I wrong?

Just reading through this thread, I must say.... OMG! YOU PICKED IT UP??? I'm impressed. I don't know how a copperhead acts out West, but here in the South they're mean! They will chase you down here! WOW! I don't get the hoe for them, I go straight to the pistol. You have definitely got more guts than I do!

Btw, pigs and chickens will kill snakes.. and eat them. You never have to worry about snakes in the pig pen. I guess chickens have better tasting eggs.

One morning I heard a comotion out by the road on the edge of our yard. My favorite White Rock hen was fighting with a snake probaly about 13 to 14 inches in length. My guineas had also noticed the comotion and beat me to them grabbing the snake and runing off playing tug-o-war with it so I never got to see what kind it was. Other then cackling the hen seemed fine. Later that day I found her just sitting on the ground in the open in front of our feed room with her eyes shut. I tried to get her to stand but then realised she could not. I checked her over and was horrified to find one of her bright yellow legs had 2 big green knots on it. Each knot had two puncture marks and was seeping clear liquid. I had no idea what to do and the only advice I got was to give her sugar water as she is probaly in shock. I bedded a cage down real good with hay and placed her in it after giving her sugar water with a dropper. The poor hen passed away shortly after dark. The snake incodent happened around 11a.m. earlier that day. I would never throw a venomous snake to my chickens. By the way no harm came to the crazy guineas although some had blood all over thier chest that evening. Snake blood I guess.

I couldn't wait to get online and add this today. Yesterday after feeding the chickens ... thinking about feeding them snakes .... I found a copperhead on my driveway!

Now as I said earlier, the one's down south are very aggressive and this one was no exception. I put my front 4 wheeler tire on its head and had my son go retrieve my pistol. When I moved away to kill it, it came at me! Anyway after the deed, I threw the remains in the woods. I thought about throwing it in the coop, but my DW was grossed out.
