I don't know about what they did years ago, but my family would always split into groups and make decorations using simple stuff . . . construction paper, foil, cranberry and popcorn garlands, pinecones, etc . . . then decorate one person in the group using the ornaments we made, as though they were a Christmas tree. Then we voted on who was the best "tree." The winning team would get a new ornament for each person. It was always fun, and for some reason the adults were always more into it than the kids. I certainly never enjoyed it as much as I do now.
Oh yeah, and we do Christmas charades and Christmas Karaoke. Charades has been around forever, as has caroling.
