If chicken has coccidia, can my dog get it from eating chicken poo??

At least one of my hens has had diarrhea issues and might have coccidia, not sure how long she's had it since she free ranges and is quite flighty so she doesn't come by me often. My dog has had diarrhea on and off for awhile, we deworm her regularly so I just thought maybe it was just from eating too much chicken poo (she eats it all the time!) but now i wonder if she could pick up coccidia from eating contaminated chicken poo..??

It depends. There is that possiblity that the dog could get it. Are you getting the de-wormer from a vet, because there is certain de-wormers for certain worms. And if you are getting OTC de-wormer it doesn't get Coccidia. Plus if your out in the country your dog is exposed to a lot more then just worms. If the diarrhea keeps up in the dog I would defiently take it to the vet. And there is de-wormer for chickens to put in there food or water. Hope this helps.

Most parasites are interchangable between species. Including humans. That is why back in the day humans used to deworm regularily as well, but these days big pharma seems to feel there is no need. they make much better money on our parasite related complaints with other drugs that mask the problem but don't correct it

Worming has nothing to do with coccidia. Cocci is a protozoa and normally corid(amprolium) or sulmet is used to get rid of coccidia. Generally speaking, coccidia is species specific. Puppies are more suseptable in getting it as are chicks because their young immune systems havnt built up enough resistance to it. The best thing to do is take a fecal sample from both your chicken and your dog to a vet and have them take a look under a microscope. Keep in mind that all animals have a small amount of cocci in their system which is normal. However, if the microscopic slide is loaded with cocci, then there's a problem. It shouldnt cost much to have the poop samples looked at.
