Illinois...

Here are some of my new chicks The last egg just hatched around 1am this morning. (Happy St Patrick's Day!) I have 2 more eggs (from a lav orp & an EE) but I couldn't see an internal pip last night, so I'll be tossing them later today.
25 eggs went into lockdown & 23 chicks hatched. - 92% Most of the eggs hatched Mon-Tues(day 20-21), so when an egg pipped on Wed afternoon, I was very surprised. Although I had eggs hatch on day 23 before, I've never had an egg hatch so late when compared to the group.

Unfortunately I did a poor job picking out the Biele eggs. My friend has a Biele roo with 4 Bieles & 4 Black sex Link hens. All 4 chicks I hatched are mixes. 4 more eggs were started later & should go into lockdown tomorrow. I couldn't pass up a few free eggs, so I set up a 2nd incubator. I hope that I did a better job selecting the Biele eggs with those.

The kids are very happy to have chicks again. It's so much fun to put your arm into the brooder & within seconds it's crawling with chicks. BTW- If anyone in the Chicago area (western burbs) wants chicks, pm me for prices. I have many purebred Orps & 6 Spitz. plus 1 Easter egger, 4 Biele mixes, & 1 mutt.
They are so cute especially the lavender.

I found one my red stars huddled in a corner 5 days ago. She is the same one that lost her foot to frostbite last year. I brought her inside the house but she would not eat or drink anything. Her poop was normal but small. Gave her some electrolytes and some scrambled eggs with yogurt via syringe. Next day she would not even open her eyes and kept sitting. Rubbing her comb and wattles would make her open her eyes for a few secs but that's about it.

So, I gave up on her and asked my son to say goodbyes when he went to bed. She stayed that way for almost 2 days going in and out of consciousness and then my son decided to feed her a teaspoon of olive oil along with electrolytes. I kept telling him to let her die in peace but he took a day off from school yesterday (he claims he was sick) and cuddled with her off and on. and fed her olive oil again in the morning and evening.

Today (Day 6), I heard some noise coming out of the sun-room and there was Marcy standing up and eating away her feed. I have no idea if she will survive or whether it was the olive oil or the TLC she received but at least she has woken up!

So happy to hear she is doing better. Goes to show, you never know. Looks like your son is going to be a good chicken keeper also.

So cute and you finally have your Spitz, Yay! Wishing you Luck on getting those Biele's

Wow! what are you getting from Heirloom? Pics please when they arrive.
I had ordered these back on Valentines day, they were running a special for the holiday. I figured I could use a nice solid black hen for my SL breeding, to darken up the black. Also, the pic of the hen for the blacks was spectacular! She was a basketball, so hopefully I will get some nice type out of it too. So I ordered 6 blacks, They sent 7 blacks, and extra packing peanuts (roos) looks like 3 Lemon cuckoo or Buff Orps roo's and a White Roo. 2 black chicks dead on arrival home from post office and 1 barely hanging on. Gave it some water and put it in the incubator to warm up, but it didn't make it. So, I am down to 4 blacks, and I hope there is a pullet in that group. I haven't really gave them a look over yet, I wanted them to warm up. But I did snap some quick pics.

Edited to add a couple of pics of eggs left to hatch, and @junaid your little chickie boy is getting big fast!

Sorry to hear about your losses during shipping. Heirloom is very reputable, I am wondering if they will replace them. Even though they sent peanuts, however that's not what you had ordered.

As per the Orpington boy, its a mystery. He just doesn't look like any results I should have had. Even if he was a Legbar hybrid, he should have been barred, so I am clueless. He certainly has taken Orpington legs. He is yours, so you can do as you please with him, however if you can keep him for couple of weeks so he has better feathering to look at, I would appreciate it.

Thinking on a different line, how did you splash look like when he was a few days old?

I am not expecting replacements, I got them for a steal anyway, plus if I look for replacements that just means more packing peanuts, (roos) for me to rehome. No thanks, I am going to have enough.

As for your boy, I was thinking perhaps Splash also, and I looked back for pics of my splash when they were young and I can't find any of course. I will hang on to him for a bit to see how he feathers out, and if you want him back or know if anyone wants him, be my guest.

I am really excited about my Orp chick that hatched last weekend. It looks like a Chocolate, has the Chocolate legs, body is a beautiful chocolate, just the reddish brown hood is making me think it is going to be a split or chocolate laced, either gold or silver. I am going to add some more of Coco's egg to the incubator as soon as some room is available.

Oh I forgot, you had won those chicks! however, it would probably be good for them to know.

As for the chocolate chick, you are right it looks like a laced, more than likely gold. I guess you will be a happy momma for the next many weeks with all the hatching still to go.

In the second picture what is the chick at the top of the pic?

Wow! I think I have its twin over here!
I have an orp chick hatch that looks like that. Black with brown on face. It's the sweetest in the bunch (so I'm of course thinking male). However, the color really surprised me. The egg looked just like all the other orp eggs, but I do not own any other colors than black & lav. I guess I was mistaken & put a Sussex mix egg into the incubator. Her eggs are usually a darker color brown with a slight fading effect on one end & also bigger than the orp eggs. Unless..... it did come from an orp. But how would I get any brown from black orps???? It sounds impossible to me, but I suppose there could have been ooopps from the breeder where I got my eggs - or from the source of her eggs. Any ideas? I was going to sell it as a "mix" since there's no way to know what it is.

Well, I think we need a pic! A black over a Lav should be a black chick. So maybe its a cross, or maybe an oooopps from the breeder.

I am assuming my Project SL is my chicks father and was told his bloodline could have SL, GL, splash, blue. And since I think this is Coco's chick who is a Chocolate, I think this chick is going to be a Chocolate Gold Lace. I checked his little feathers coming in and there is some gold lacing on his wings. He is a beautiful chocolate brown except for around his face, which has the usual hood of a GL chick. So now, I am hording Coco's eggs. Would love to get a couple of pullets.
