I purchased two poults about a month ago, and they've been doing well until today. During my regular check, I noticed that one of them had a swollen leg around the knee. It doesn't seem to be in pain, but it walks with a limp, and the leg bends inwards when walking or running. I can touch and move the leg without the poult showing any signs of pain. they are white turkeys.

Broad breasted white turkeys are susceptible to perosis aka slipped tendon. Feel the hock joint to check if the tendon has slipped out of its groove.

I checked both knees and they felt the same. I tried massaging them to see if I could feel the tendon, but I couldn't detect any difference. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the swelling was much more severe on the inside of the knee. I also had my dad feel them; he agreed it might be a slipped tendon. If it is, what should I do to help it? I really care about my poults and am willing to go the extra mile to make sure they survive.

You have to extend the leg and manipulate the tendon back into the groove in the back of the hock. Then you need to secure it there as it will want to pop back out.

Fashion a splint to prevent the tendon from popping back out. Tape the splint in place.

It can be helpful to give the poults vitamin B complex made at the rate of 1/2 tablet dissolved in one gallon of water. Make it their only source of water. It should be made fresh daily.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to try it tomorrow, as I already have everything and everyone put up. I'll give them the vitamin B. I also have a question about the water: Will it be safe for both of them to drink, or just the one with the bad knee? Also, how long should I leave the splint on? best regards, Paul.

The vitamin B complex is good for both of them.

It will probably need to be splinted for at least 4 weeks. With their rapid rate of growth it will need to be changed often.

I've tried to find the tendon but I still can't feel a difference should I just straighten their leg and put on a splint anyway? the swelling almost feels like a bony material I'll try and upload an image of the leg
