I also say "soda pop" though and it drives people crazy.

When I'm lazy, I call it pop.
When other people call it soda, I understand what they mean.
And when I want to be sure there's no confusion, I call it soda pop.
(Kind of like "ink pen" and "sewing pin" if I'm afraid that "pen" or "pin" will be mistaken for each other.)
