INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Howdy all! Life has been a bit crazy here! I got a bunch done outside today, got all of the heated waterers pulled and swapped and got some trees/bushes down and grass seed spread. I am wiped!

I have been hatching quite a bit in my coolerbator and this latest hatch have so far hatched 9/11 that made it to lock down. Today is day 21 (this round hatched early!) so I still have hope on at least one of the remaining eggs. I worried my hatch percentages would be terrible in my homemade incubator and have been pleasantly surprised! I do have to admit, I am having trouble letting these teeny Bielie babies go! I may have to hatch some extra for myself!!!!

I think I saw that someone else grabbed up a juvenile Bielie pair, I can't wait to hear how you like them! I am obsessed with the breed myself!

In other news I had two angry broodies giving me death stares while I cleaned the coop today. Tis the season! Those girls are getting broken! No more half wild chicks that I can't touch or socialize!

Hi again all,

I'm looking for avian vet suggestions in NW Indiana (I'm in South Bend). My chicken hasn't gotten better and has developed a consistent cough w/o runny nose or eye issues since we started tube feeding (the vet did it the first time, and maybe something dripped into her lungs or her trachea got irritated, or she picked up something at the vet), and I'm looking for second opinions from a vet w/ more chicken experience.

Thanks!
Sent you a pm. but I'll post here too. I have looked all over the area to find anyone that will treat chickens. The only one that I've found is:

They require you to bring the bird in for an exam.

Rooster Collars-
I made my own with mixed success. A lot depends on the roo.
For our 1st roo, it did not work. The collar made his crow longer & higher pitched. In general: WORSE! If I tightened it, well, it looked painful & likely deadly. I let him be free to crow & my neighbors assured me that they didn't mind or a few said they actually liked it. Yet, that boy crowed all day & I didn't want the risk. We rehomed him.

For our current roo, the collar muffles his crow. He doesn't crow often either. I prefer to leave it off ( b/c he doesn't crow often) and only use it on days when I believe there may be crowing - ie: neighbors using power tools, party nearby with lots of strangers' voices, etc. Even then, he doesn't continue for more than 5-10xs. The collar makes it even less. I don't think the collars should be on 24/7. If a chicken can find a way to injury himself, he will. IMO- Giving him a collar to help with that task just isn't worth it. It's really a short-term fix at best.

Thanks for your first hand experience, it's very helpful.

Got the 2 main coops cleaned out and resanded and fresh straw in the nest boxes. Had to clip some wings today too. Trying to keep my girls a little safer. They didn't know what to think. I still had one or two that got out and of course the rooster wasn't having anything of the confinement. He just jumped the 4 foot fence, but then he didn't understand why none of his girls didn't follow him, he kept making that "I FOUND SOMEthiNG Great" call and they just stood at the fence watching him. He eventually just jumped back in.

I also think I have a broodie silkie, which couldn't come at a better time. I have some awesome eggs from @kabhyper1 and I think my silkie will make a great momma to them and then I don't have to worry about my incubator killing the eggs. Scarlett is a really great broodie, she takes it very seriously. I'll have to wait a day or to to make sure, but she didn't move all day today, so hears hoping

. At this moment my DH is actually watching utube vids on how to make a DIY incubator. I need more room than what the styros can provide and I am so tired of the temp fluctuations. I have a test hatch hatching right now and I have gotten 3 chicks so far and I started with 41 eggs. It's a brand new FI 9300, i thought the digital controls would be so much better, but now I don't know what to think. I have 2 other styros going to and it seems that I have had some awful temps this weekend and I never touched them.

I'm hoping everything will still be okay but we will have to see next weekend. I just hope I get more than 3 chicks. I have some really cool eggs that I am looking so forward to seeing. Well anyway hope everyone had a great weekend. It looks like the weather is going to warm up this week so it's something to look forward too.

I couldn't stand it, five chicks just wasn't enough.

Based upon coloring, and actions, I think one of my Rocks may well be a rooster (another deciding factor towards getting more pullets) and I live in the city. If he is in fact a he, I'd really like to keep him, but I'm worried about the crowing. I've discovered this product on YouTube (
), and it doesn't seem to hurt the rooster at all, but it sure makes his crow a lot less pronounced and I'm considering something like this if he is in fact a he. I'm curious as to anybody with any experience with this or similar product, I'm not interested in harming the bird to keep him quiet, and I'd really hate to have to kill him just cause he's a he.

I will testify to their adorableness! My next post will be today's photo shoot! So sorry another buyer backed out on you. I can't believe how inconsiderate people can be!
So if anyone would like some very darling Jubilee Orp chicks, I have several available now and more coming!

I have a friend whose chicks from Agrarian had pasty butt. When she went to pick them up he handed them to her and said "You need to clean that up". She wanted those breeds bad enough she took them b/c they were the only ones left. They come from Meyer hatchery. I had no problem with mine last year but it was later in the year. I wonder if the extra cold is stressing them out more.
I have one chick with Pasty butt as well. I got her right after she was shipped to Agrarian. I clean it off, put a little olive oil back there, and repeat a few times a day. I'm going to scramble an egg here shortly for them as a treat too.

Your CCL roo is so gorgeous. I am so sad I don't have a good picture of mine who passed this winter. He had the best big ole floppy comb. I miss his cock-a-doodle (he skipped the last doo). Now i am just plain sad thinking about him

I think I some chick therapy.
Hi RouletteRun, I live on the south side of Chicago and was hoping my CCL Roo would be able to stay. A couple of the neighborhood children were over looking at the chickens, and a little girl said that the rooster wakes her father up during the day (he works overnites). Unfortunately I had to rehome him. He was beautiful. I also saw the collar on Youtube and was considering trying that on the next roo I try keeping. I did a search here on BYC and have seen mixed reviews. I am interested if anyone on the Indiana thread has tried them. Here is a pic of my handsome Roo.

I saw the collars after the fact, but was thinking of trying it the next time

My thought on the collars is one word STRANGULATION! Since we free range, and my chickens are going in and out of bushes and under pine trees and through stick piles - I can't imagine one of mine making it through a day without strangling themselves!

several mixed chicks available if anyone is interested! Would be from my large fowl pen of partridge brahma and blue laced red wyandotte roos over partridge brahma, BLRW, and mottle orp hens
