Hi all

This is my little 5 day old baby, he hatched with a not fully absorbed yolk sack and had been getting stronger each day!
I'm a bit concerned about the stomach it seems to swell quite a bit before he poops and I'm also not sure if the navel is infected?
Any advice for this baby

What a little fighter! Doesn't look too bad. It’s great to hear he’s getting stronger each day. A slightly swollen belly before pooping can sometimes be normal as their digestive system is still adjusting, but if the swelling seems excessive or he’s straining a lot, it could be a sign of constipation or slow digestion.

For the navel, if it looks red, (can't see on my laptop that well, I am sorry), or if has a bad smell, or feels warm/swollen, there’s a chance of infection (technical name is omphalitis). You can dab a little Betadine (povidone-iodine) or Vetericyn on the area to keep it clean and prevent infection. Keeping him warm, dry, and on clean bedding is important while he heals.

If the swelling gets worse or he seems weak, a tiny drop of Nutri-Drench or sugar water can help give him a boost. You're doing great looking out for him!

Thank you Jeff

I am keeping a close eye on it but the navel is more black than red so hopefully he is going to be ok,
This little one (named Scruff because of what he looked liked on first sight) and my daughter have formed such a bond in such a short time.

I will definitely keep your advice, will it do any harm to dab a little Betadine incase?

You're very welcome! It’s great to hear Scruff and your daughter are already so close, that bond is so special. If the navel is more black than red, it could just be a sign of healing, but definitely keep an eye on it. As for the Betadine, it shouldn't do any harm at all to dab a little on as a precaution. Just be gentle with it and make sure not to overdo it. You’re doing an amazing job caring for Scruff--I’m sure he’ll continue to get stronger each day!
