I'm brand new to raising chickens. I have 8 beautiful Wyandottes. They're almost 11 weeks old, 2 males, and 6 females. I let them free range with supervision.
4 days ago I thought one of my white laced ladies got stung by a bee in the run or something. Half her head was swollen and she barely had her eye open. She seemed alright otherwise. Breathing normally, no discharge, no sneezing, no lethargy, etc. Checked her the next day and the swelling went down but 2 more birds had 1/2 swollen faces. The white pine next to the coop had started releasing pollen the day before all the symptoms started.
I assumed I had a problem but not sure what. So I cleaned everything. Deep cleaned the run and coop along with all their accessories. Started researching and thought it was possible they have infectious coryza and I bought
My problem is that I don't know if they need it and I don't want to wipe out their gut flora for nothing.
Since my first bird came down with a swollen head I've had a total of 4 birds come down with it. They're poop ranges from brownish and white mix to a green and white but no diarrhea. They're all still running around like goofballs or diving in to get them wormies when I toss them. So no lethargy or appetite loss for any of them. But they still have one side all puffed up.
Here's Morgana's normal side. Her symptoms have been visible for almost 3 days.
Morg's swollen side
Then here's Cornelius and his normal side. He's had symptoms for 3 days also.
Corney's swollen side. It used to be a little bit worse. He isn't squinting hardly at all now.
Then there's Baba who's had symptoms for 2 days. He's got 2 symptoms... Obviously swollen head is his most pressing concern but he's super snuggly all of a sudden.
He's not an aggressive roo but he's only usually seeking my affection maybe couple times a week. Now he barely leaves my side if I'm around.
He wanted me to hold him for about 20 minutes before I got these pictures.
I don't know what to think. Do chickens get allergies to pollen? Do they have the coryza but they're young spring juvenile chickens so it doesn't seem so bad maybe? Should I air on caution and get them on antibiotics and if so is Saturday going to be too late? Getting one to a vet is a very long trip and has to be a last resort... Any help is welcome. Thank you!
(Petri was patient 0, and she slipped the photo shoot somehow. Symptoms for 4 days, hers was the worst of the swelling heads, and the swelling improved significantly in the first 24 hours but is still puffy today. She looks like She's angry from the left side. Just puffy around the eye)
