Injured Chicken

Hi everyone!
So I woke up this morning and one of the chicks had slipped into the chicken wire and unfortunately the wire essentially took her scalp. She’s still very much alive and peeping. I put vetericyn anti microbial poultry care wound spray on it gently, separated her from the flock and I have her some water to.
What else should I do? Since she is still alive I’d like to try and save her if possible.

Welcome to BYC. Keep some plain triple antibiotic ointment on the wound after the Vetericyn to keep it from drying out. I would give SaveAChick electrolytes and vitamins, or a couple of drops of Poultry NutriDrench. Mix a little mushy wet chick crumbles and a bit of stirred egg. If you have pictures, that would be good. Let us know how she gets along.

If you follow Eggcessive's advice, odds are good that your chick will recover and be just fine. Her feathers will regrow and you would never know she got scalped. Chickens recover from wounds like this all the time.

If you're concerned, post some pictures of the wound, and we can give our opinion of how it's healing.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the help. She’s still peeping and looking around. I’ll take you up on your suggestions! Thank you! Here is a picture of her poor head, it is graphic I am sorry.

This type of injury can also be common from pecking by older birds or a rooster. Is she only with chicks her age or are there older birds? It may be a little difficult reintegrating her back into her flock of chicks. If you can keep them close and separated with a screen or netting until she heals a little, you might be able to have supervised visits with them daily. Let us know how she gets along.

We have chickens of all ages, she was hatched with our flock and her mama is a great hen and she has four brothers and a sister. Since we live in a dusty area I was a little worried about keeping her outside since it’s a little windy and I’m trying to keep the wound clean. And of course older chickens messing with her so I kept her separate for today. I’ll try a supervised visit and see if I can make her a little spot with the other girld and let you know how it goes!
