International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I got this photo of Loki today, below is him when he had just matured. His type has only improved with age, it’s a shame the parasitic white has gotten through his tail, but he is over two years old now.

Anyway, I put him up for sale today, knowing that he genes live on in Napoleon and I won’t be getting Marans eggs for the rest of the year. He is a great Marans cock, I was so lucky to have him as my F0, but the tail, as well as him being heterozygous for yellow legs, means I cannot continue to breed him forever. I will sell him as a pair with Natasha, hopefully “culling” yellow legs out my marans, if Napoleon hasn’t inherited a copy.

I’m still hoping to get DCMs for the GCM project, but with his better tail, Napoleon will be the better choice to sire that line. I’m on the lookout for DCM hens, even if they are not fantastic, workable hens can be improved with my BlCM genetics.

I’ll dedicate a longer post to the BCM pair if they sell, but I thought I’d post this for now.

Good luck rehoming him. How many Marans do you currently have now?
Not sure if you saw my other thread but I sold the 5 Marans mix boys so I'm at 6 BCM cockerels I'll have to select thru here in a few weeks. Plus the 3 littles.... I'm hoping to keep at least 2 of these for breeders next year.

So I'll need some help with selections and pairings when the time comes.

I currently just have the original trio (Loki, Natasha and Chanel), plus Napoleon. It will just be Chanel and her grandson for a while when the BCM pair goes, I’ll miss the egg but I thought selling Natasha with Loki would increase his chances of going on to another breeding flock where he can be as helpful as he has been for me.

I’ll buy three or so DCMs to bring the numbers up (there’s two legbars in the pen too).

Sorry to hear but I understand your decision. Loki has been a good boy for you, and Natasha has gave you very beautiful eggs.

Hope they find a good home.
