International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

What is a hatching bag and where can I get them?! :D
Hatching bags are used to separate eggs for more controlled identification of certain hens or breeds you need to keep apart.

Some.. like my myself just use lingerie or laundry bags like these.

I cut them down and resew to fit how many eggs I'm setting leaving one opening and string tied closed to access chicks at hatch for leg banding.
This spring I hatched eggs from 3 specific hens, so used 2 bags at lockdown to separate them and then was able to leg band each set of chicks as I moved them to the brooder after hatch.

To elaborate a little..The 3 pullets from the Easter hatch from Betty are showing mossiness still with one of the boys being mossy from this hatch, the pullet from this hatch isn't mossy. She also produced 'head spot'. 2 of the Easter pullets and the one pullet that hatched with these 4 boys has dark eyes.
I seem to think Betty gave me a few nice looking boys overall with varying degrees of chest copper. But she is throwing the dark eyes and mossy to the pullets.

I'm looking to keep 2-3 of the 7 boys here that stand out for now until the other grow outs can be assessed.

Any and all wisdom shared would be very truly appreciated as always.

Red/yellow band. Kong x Betty @16 wks. He's the dominant and 1 of the biggest of the 7.

My notes say...barely any copper at 8 wks, very minimal chest copper with a white feather coming in on left side of comb.

Am I seeing black shoulders on this guy? View attachment 3946039View attachment 3946040View attachment 3946041View attachment 3946042View attachment 3946043View attachment 3946044View attachment 3946045View attachment 3946046View attachment 3946047View attachment 3946048
yes... yes you are seeing some black shoulder on that dude 🥲

I took more pics of the same boy as above because from what I'm seeing it looks like he's got coloring coming in on his shoulders now a week later or am I mistaken. He's 17 wks now.
I just want to be perfectly clear I'm not putting a decent cockerel on the cull list.

Pic heavy...🙂

Is black wing a fault
It looks like you’ve got the tail fixed with this guy. His back is long so hopefully he’ll fatten up and he’ll have great type.
